Pilates Fitness Equipment And Its Uses

Pilates is a fitness system that focuses on core strength and muscle control. It helps to keep the body balanced and flexible while maintaining spinal support, through awareness of the breath. There are several exercise pieces and pilates fitness equipment that work with the system.

The reformer, one of the most common pieces of equipment, is usually made from wood. It consists of springs, a footboard and a pulley in order to pull the carriage, or push it, and by using the body weight to resist. Key focuses are on strengthening the core and body flexibility.

Another piece of equipment is the Cadillac. It consists of a series of different devices attached, like leg and arm springs, a trapeze and a stretching bar. Using the cadillac can isolate every muscle group, but is mostly only found in private pilates classes.

Another device, the spine corrector, is used to restore the natural curvature of the spine. It is barrel shaped and strengthens the abdominal muscles and the back while keeping the spine flexible. It can also tone the thighs and core muscles, and lessen a humpback.

Another machine is the Wunda chair, an apparatus that is geared towards resistance exercise. It is designed to target muscle groups not otherwise easily reached by traditional techniques. It focuses on conditioning the upper and lower body.

Pilates includes many smaller props, such as weighted balls, rotating disks and resistance bands. The magic circle, a padded ring made of rubber or flexible metal, provides light resistance and targets the inner and outer thighs, arms, and chest.

Pilates focuses on what they call the powerhouse muscles, the muscles in the center of the body. This includes the buttocks and lower back and hips, centered in the body, and oxygenation of the muscles. Pilates is a great tension reducer for the shoulders and neck.
